Join us for an entertaining lion dance performance from the CU Lion Dance student team and hear about the formation of the CUAFA from its current President, Professor X. Edward Guo P: '19CC, '19SEAS, '23CC (Columbia University Stanley Dicker Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Professor of Medical Sciences). Professor Mae M. Ngai, Ph.D. '93GSAS, '95GSAS.,'98GSAS (Lung Family Professor of Asian American Studies and Professor of History, and Co-Director of the Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race at Columbia University) will also join us to talk about Asian American Studies at Columbia University and the work of the Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race.
X. Edward Guo is a world-renowned leader in bone biomechanics and bioengineering, known for developing innovative, three-dimensional, bone-imaging analysis techniques that have wide applications in osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. He is currently pioneering novel biomedical engineering techniques to reveal the cellular and molecular basis of a skeleton’s ability to respond to mechanical loading, an important basic science and clinical issue underlying many musculoskeletal disorders. One of the founding members of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Guo joined Columbia Engineering in 1996.
Mae M. Ngai is a U.S. legal and political historian interested in questions of immigration, citizenship, and nationalism. A Guggenheim Fellow, she has also received fellowships by the Institute for Advanced Study, the Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers at the NY Public Library, and the Library of Congress, among others. Ngai is an award winning author and has written on immigration history and policy for the Washington Post, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, the Atlantic, and the Nation. She was also a labor-union organizer and educator in New York City.
